In brief: In Playa del Inglés, in the south of Gran Canaria, stay on the beachfront for an easy walk down to the beach, near Yumbo Centrum if you’re after nightlife and an LGBTQ+ scene, or in Campo Internacional if you prefer peace and quiet close to the dunes. The airport is around 30 km away. Among the places we recommend are Hotel Nayra - Adults Only, Villa RG Boutique Hotel - Adults Only and Heavens Garden House.

Playa del Inglés is the main tourist hub in the south of Gran Canaria: a resort town that has been growing since the 1960s in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, with a wide, golden-sand beach stretching all the way to the Maspalomas Dunes and much of the island’s nightlife.

Choosing where to stay in Playa del Inglés can make all the difference between a beach holiday, nights out near Yumbo or a week in a house with a pool on a quiet street. Here we explain each area and the places we’ve hand-picked, along with what you need to know before making a reservation.

Playa del Inglés or Maspalomas: they’re not the same

They share a municipality and coastline, so they’re often confused, but the atmosphere changes considerably from one side of the dunes to the other.

  • Playa del Inglés: east of the dunes, denser and livelier, with plenty of apartments, bungalows and adults-only hotels, Yumbo Centrum and the heart of the island’s LGBTQ+ scene.
  • Maspalomas: to the west, around the lighthouse, the lagoon and Meloneras, with large resorts, golf courses and a more family-friendly, peaceful feel. It has its own guide and selection of places to stay in Maspalomas.

If you want to walk everywhere, go out at night and keep the beach close at hand, Playa del Inglés is the most practical base in the south.

How to choose an area within Playa del Inglés

The area slopes uphill from the sea, so distance to the beach and Yumbo is often the deciding factor:

  • Beachfront and Paseo Costa Canaria: by the sea, with direct access down to the sand. The most convenient choice if you’re here for the beach.
  • Around Yumbo Centrum and Avenida de Tirajana: the shopping and nightlife hub, with venues open until late. Ideal for going out; less so if you’re a light sleeper.
  • Campo Internacional: between Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas, with bungalows and low-rise houses, more peace and quiet, and the dunes nearby. Perfect for families and longer stays.
  • Upper area: residential streets with bungalows and pools, quieter and farther from the sea.

Keep in mind that some buildings are several decades old, although renovations are underway: in 2025, the town council approved the refurbishment of three complexes in the area, with an investment of around €5 million. You can see all the options on the Playa del Inglés accommodation page.

What to see and do from Playa del Inglés

The beach is the main attraction. It joins seamlessly with Maspalomas Beach and runs along the Maspalomas Dunes, a protected natural area. Walking across them to the lighthouse and lagoon is one of the classic excursions in the south; bring water and stick to the marked trails.

Above the beach, Paseo Costa Canaria follows the coastline towards San Agustín. Near the slide down to the beach, the island council has turned an abandoned hillside into a landscaped viewpoint, planted mainly with native species and lit with LEDs for night-time views. For shopping and entertainment, Yumbo Centrum is the place to meet, day or night.

With a car, you can reach the island’s interior in under an hour: the Fataga ravine and village, Tejeda and Roque Nublo, or Puerto de Mogán along the coast. Find more ideas in our guide to places to stay in Gran Canaria.

When to go and key events

The mild climate makes it a year-round destination. Winter is the high season, thanks to visitors from northern Europe, while spring and autumn give you more choice of places to stay.

  • Winter Pride Maspalomas: held every year in early November, with Yumbo Centrum as its main venue. In 2025, its parade drew around 40,000 people.
  • Maspalomas International Carnival 2027: the next edition’s theme will be “A World of Toys”, chosen by public vote.
  • Maspalomas Pride: every spring, it fills Yumbo and the municipality’s streets once again for a week.

Demand surges during Pride events and Carnival, especially near Yumbo. If your trip coincides with one, make your reservation well in advance.

Getting there and getting around

Gran Canaria Airport is around 30 km away, about half an hour by car or taxi on the GC-1 motorway. Global buses connect the airport and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with Playa del Inglés, and continue towards Maspalomas and Mogán.

Most places in the area are within walking distance, although the uphill streets can be tiring. You only need a car for excursions; if you hire one, check the parking situation, as many places rely on street parking. Find all the details in our guide to getting to Gran Canaria.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from travellers planning a stay in Playa del Inglés.

Is it better to stay in Playa del Inglés or Maspalomas?

It depends on the kind of trip you want. Playa del Inglés is livelier and more compact: the beach, Yumbo Centrum, restaurants and nightlife are all within a short walk. Maspalomas, on the other side of the dunes, around the lighthouse and Meloneras, is quieter and more family-friendly, with large resorts and golf courses. If you’re looking for atmosphere and want to get around on foot, stay in Playa del Inglés; if you value peace and quiet, Maspalomas is a better fit.

Which area of Playa del Inglés is the quietest?

Campo Internacional, between Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas, is the quietest area: streets of bungalows and low-rise houses, with the dunes and Botanical Park nearby. The residential streets in the upper part are also peaceful, although they’re farther from the sea and involve some hills. Avoid the immediate surroundings of Yumbo Centrum if you’re a light sleeper, as nightlife there goes on until the early hours, especially at weekends.

Is Playa del Inglés a good destination for families with children?

Yes, as long as you choose your accommodation carefully. Many of the best-rated hotels in Playa del Inglés are adults-only, so with children a holiday home with a pool, kitchen and outdoor space is the most practical option. Look in Campo Internacional or on streets away from Yumbo. The beach is wide, with fine sand, and there are theme parks and easy island excursions nearby to mix things up.

How do you get to Playa del Inglés from the airport?

Gran Canaria Airport is around 30 km from Playa del Inglés, about half an hour by car on the GC-1 motorway. You can take a taxi, hire a car or use Global buses, which connect the airport with the south of the island and also run to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. If travelling by bus, check timetables and stops in advance, as the nearest stop depends on where you’re staying.

When is Playa del Inglés at its liveliest?

Winter is the high season, thanks to visitors from northern Europe. The liveliest times are the major events: Maspalomas Pride in spring, the Maspalomas International Carnival and Winter Pride, held in early November with Yumbo Centrum as its main venue. Places to stay near Yumbo fill up quickly at these times, so it’s best to make your reservation well in advance.
