In brief: for a stay in San Miguel de Abona, in the south of Tenerife, the best base is the coast around Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf: two golf courses, coves and Tenerife South Airport just minutes away. It’s ideal for golfers, families and longer stays. The village, in the midlands, is quieter and cooler. Among our picks: Las Meninas Tenerife, Villa Golf y Mar and Casa El granero de Antonio.

San Miguel de Abona is a municipality in southern Tenerife that stretches from the midlands down to the sea. The traditional village sits higher up; below, the volcanic coastline is dotted with low-rise developments, two golf courses and a marina.

There are no towering hotel blocks here: almost all the accommodation consists of holiday homes and villas with pools, and the mayor has explained that the current General Plan does not provide for any new tourist beds. Choosing where to stay in San Miguel de Abona therefore means choosing a home and an elevation.

We select each place one by one for its amenities and location. You’ll find the full range on our accommodation in San Miguel de Abona page.

How to choose an area in San Miguel de Abona

The TF-1 motorway divides the municipality in two: towards the sea, the tourist coast; inland, the neighbourhoods and village centre.

  • Golf del Sur: an established development around its golf course, with apartments and villas. Ideal for golfers and anyone who wants to stay near the airport.
  • Amarilla Golf: smaller and quieter, with the golf course overlooking the sea and Marina San Miguel marina. A good fit for couples and families.
  • The village and midlands: the village and neighbourhoods such as Tamaide and Aldea Blanca, with cooler nights and local life.
  • Llano del Camello and Las Chafiras: a shopping and industrial area, useful for stocking up but not particularly appealing for an overnight stay.

If you’re here to play golf or alternate between the pool and the sea, stay on the coast. If you’re after peace and agricultural landscapes, head up to the village, with a car.

Staying on the coast: golf, coves and your own pool

The coastline is low and rocky, with small beaches between the developments; what sets it apart are the homes with pools beside the golf courses. Here are four we recommend.

What to see and do in San Miguel de Abona

The village centre is worth a morning: visit the Church of San Miguel Arcángel, the old town streets and Casa del Capitán, a restored Canarian manor house now used for cultural events.

On the coast, a coastal path links Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf, passing coves and Marina San Miguel marina. Nearby, the fishing village of Los Abrigos is the place to go for fish. For wide sandy beaches, El Médano is just a short drive away.

If you’re heading up to Mount Teide, the most direct route from the south goes through Vilaflor. Since 19 January 2026, reservations through Tenerife ON and a fee for non-residents of the island have been required for the Telesforo Bravo and Montaña Blanca-La Rambleta trails.

When to go

Southern Tenerife is dry and sunny all year round, so the coast is a good choice in any season. In autumn, Saborea San Miguel de Abona offers a tapas trail featuring local wine.

The San Miguel Arcángel festivities take place in late September, with a pilgrimage featuring decorated carts and oxen through the village centre and the main celebration on the 29th. It’s best to book ahead for those days.

Getting there and getting around

Tenerife South Airport, the island’s busiest airport, with almost 14 million passengers in 2025, is just minutes from the coast of San Miguel. Aena plans to completely remodel its terminal during the 2027–2031 period, without closing the airport during the works.

The TF-1 takes you to Adeje in half an hour. TITSA buses are available, but a hire car is almost essential for exploring the rest of Tenerife.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the questions we’re most often asked by people planning a trip to San Miguel de Abona.

What is the best area to stay in San Miguel de Abona?

For most travellers, it’s the coast: Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf are home to almost all the villas with pools, the two golf courses and the marina, just minutes from Tenerife South Airport. If you prefer rural landscapes and cooler nights, the village centre and neighbourhoods such as Tamaide and Aldea Blanca are good alternatives, though you’ll need a car to get down to the beach.

Is San Miguel de Abona a good base for a trip with children?

Yes, especially if you rent a house with a pool on the coast. The developments are quiet, low-rise and have little traffic, and some homes have a children’s pool and play area. The downside is that the municipality’s beaches are small and rocky or have dark sand; for a wide sandy beach with children, El Médano or Los Cristianos are less than half an hour away by car.

Do you need a car in San Miguel de Abona?

It’s highly recommended. TITSA buses connect the municipality with the airport and other towns in the south, but their frequency doesn’t always fit travel plans, and the developments are spread out. By car, you can reach the beaches of El Médano in minutes, Adeje in half an hour and Mount Teide in just over an hour.

Is it close to Tenerife South Airport?

Very close. The coast of San Miguel de Abona, including Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf, is just a few minutes’ drive from the airport, making it very convenient for short breaks or early-morning flights. Aena plans to remodel the terminal during the 2027–2031 period while keeping the airport open, so it’s worth checking access arrangements before each trip.

What can you do in San Miguel de Abona besides play golf?

Plenty. You can explore the village centre, with the Church of San Miguel Arcángel and Casa del Capitán, walk along the coastal path between the developments or visit Marina San Miguel marina. In autumn, Saborea San Miguel de Abona runs a tapas trail featuring local wine, and in late September the village celebrates its patron saint festivities with a pilgrimage. Mount Teide is just over an hour away.
