In brief: There are two clear options for staying in Caleta de Fuste, in the municipality of Antigua and about ten minutes from the airport. The streets beside the calm waters of Playa del Castillo bay put you within walking distance of the beach and marina. The golf area, towards Las Salinas, is home to villas with private pools for families and groups. Our picks include Castillo Mar 95, Villa Rochelle and ROSET.

Caleta de Fuste, shown on official maps as El Castillo, is the main tourist hub in central Fuerteventura. It grew around a crescent-shaped bay with golden sand, a small marina and an 18th-century defensive tower that still guards the entrance.

Its main advantage is its location: the airport and Puerto del Rosario are close by, and the north and south of the island are roughly equidistant. It’s a peaceful destination geared towards families, golfers and anyone looking for an easy beach holiday. Here are the areas that work best and the homes we hand-pick before recommending them.

How to choose an area in Caleta de Fuste

The centre is small and flat, so your choice mainly depends on whether you want to walk to the beach or would rather have more space and your own pool:

  • The bay and marina: the streets around Playa del Castillo, with the castle, marina, restaurants and shops just minutes away. This is the area to choose if you want to get around without a car.
  • The golf developments: south of the centre, between Fuerteventura Golf Club and Golf Club Salinas de Antigua. Villas with gardens and pools are the norm here, offering more space and peace and quiet.
  • Playa de la Guirra and Las Salinas: the southern end, a more residential area with an open beach and the old salt pans nearby. It works well if you want to mix beach time with golf and coastal walks.

With young children and no car, the bay is the most convenient option, as the water is barely choppy. If you’re travelling as a group or with several families, a villa in the golf area gives you more room, although you’ll almost always need to walk or drive a little way to the beach.

Things to see and do in Caleta de Fuste

The walk along the bay is at the heart of daily life. Castillo de Caleta de Fuste, a circular stone tower built in the 18th century to protect the coast from pirates, gave the town its name and stands beside the marina, where boat trips and diving activities set off.

Head south for a seaside walk to Playa de la Guirra and the Salinas del Carmen, where salt is still produced in evaporation pans beside the ocean and a small museum explains the trade. The two golf courses, Fuerteventura Golf Club and Salinas de Antigua, attract players all year round.

On summer Friday afternoons, El Castillo square hosts a summer market; in 2026 it ran from June to September, from 17:30 to 22:00. Inland, a 15-minute drive away, is the village of Antigua, with its windmill and white church. Every May it hosts the Island Craft Fair: the 2026 edition drew more than 25,000 visitors, and the town council ran free buses from Caleta.

When to visit Caleta de Fuste

Caleta is a year-round destination, as eastern Fuerteventura has a mild, dry climate even in winter. November to March is high season for those escaping the cold and for golfers, with mild days and cooler sea temperatures.

In summer, the trade winds blow strongly, but the bay offers more shelter than the open beaches, and the atmosphere is more family-oriented. Spring and autumn are good times to combine swimming and day trips with fewer crowds; for Easter and Christmas, book well ahead, especially for larger villas.

Getting there and getting around

Fuerteventura Airport is about a ten-minute drive away, a major advantage for short stays or travelling with children. By bus, line 3 connects Puerto del Rosario, the airport, Caleta de Fuste and Las Salinas; in June 2026, the island council increased weekend services and announced a 3 Exprés service using electric buses on the same route.

However, a car is almost essential for exploring the island: Corralejo is to the north and Jandía’s long beaches are to the south. The motorway section between the airport and Pozo Negro, which includes a tunnel about 1.2 kilometres long, went out to tender in late 2025 and was provisionally awarded in June 2026; once complete, it will improve access to Caleta. Check the parking arrangements when booking: several homes only have public street parking. Find out more in our guide to getting to Fuerteventura.

Frequently asked questions

These are the questions that come up most often when planning a few days in Caleta de Fuste.

What’s the best area to stay in Caleta de Fuste?

It depends on how you’re travelling. If you want to get around on foot, look for accommodation in the streets around Playa del Castillo bay, close to the marina, restaurants and shops. If you’re travelling as a group or with several families and will have a car, the golf area between Fuerteventura Golf Club and Golf Club Salinas de Antigua has larger villas with private pools. The southern end, beside Playa de la Guirra and Las Salinas, is more residential and peaceful.

Is Caleta de Fuste a good place to visit with children?

Yes, it’s one of the most convenient areas in Fuerteventura for families. The main beach is in a sheltered bay, with very calm, shallow water, and the airport is about ten minutes away, making transfers shorter. Several homes in our selection have a private pool, play area or high chair, including Castillo Mar 95 and Villa Rochelle. Before booking, check the check-in hours and whether there are stairs, as some homes have upper floors and no lift.

How do you get to Caleta de Fuste from the airport?

Caleta de Fuste is about a ten-minute drive from Fuerteventura Airport, on the east coast. For public transport, bus line 3 connects Puerto del Rosario, the airport, Caleta de Fuste and Las Salinas; in June 2026, the island council increased weekend services and announced an express service using electric buses. You can also take a taxi or pick up a hire car at the airport, the most practical option if you’re staying in a villa.

Do you need a car to stay in Caleta de Fuste?

Not if you’re just enjoying the bay: the centre is flat, and from homes near Playa del Castillo you can walk to the beach, marina and restaurants. If you’re staying in the golf area or want to explore the island, a car is almost essential, as Corralejo, the dunes and Jandía’s beaches are far away. Check the parking arrangements when booking: some homes only have public street parking, while others, such as Villa Ventura, offer private parking.

Are there hotels in Caleta de Fuste, or only houses and villas?

There are hotels and apartment complexes, particularly by the bay, but the accommodation we like best is holiday homes and detached villas. That’s why our selection consists of places with fully equipped kitchens, many with private pools, gardens and barbecues, ideal for families, groups or longer stays. Bear in mind that most have house rules, such as quiet hours at night and bans on parties or stag and hen parties, and some require a deposit.
